What is a colorimeter? A colorimeter measures the amount of light transmitted or reflected through a liquid sample.
What is a spectrophotometer? A Spectrophotometer does similar things. Except it measures wavelengths beyond the range of the visible colors into infrared and ultraviolet regions.
How do they work? Basically, colorimeters and spectrophotometers “read” a liquid sample, and give you a reading that corresponds to the sample’s color.
You can use the reading to identify chemical compounds or quantify their concentration.
Any colorimeter and its more sophisticated counterpart, the spectrophotometer, has five basic components:
